Three passions have I: Transgender issues, baseball, and music. The first is the only one that gets significant play here. The second is of very limited interest in this region of the internet. Music, though, is universal, and that is where I have been taking refuge recently. This past week, I have listened to far more music than podcasts on my iPod, a reversal for me and one likely to continue.
I dabble in guitar, good with chords, infantile with fingering. I sing like a bird (a goose, btw). So I can make music in a pinch, but I prefer to immerse myself in the work of other, more professional artists. With the time I spend reading and writing blogs, listening is really all I can make time for. It remains the soundest(!) cure for gender dysphoria at my disposal.
With that in mind, and in an effort to have new material on my page daily, I have started a little text sidebar to share the earworm that has been stuck in my head. There's nearly always one present. Sometimes it will shift over the course of the day, sometimes one will play continually for days. Usually this is pleasant. Occasionally, I will have something perfectly awful browbeating me, say, "Copacabana" or Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun." Gag! Those are the exception, thankfully. If I can guide someone toward a worthwhile artist, more's the better.

How can "Seasons in the sun" be awful!!!
ReplyDeleteMy parents used to love that song, it was played in the car on trips a reasonable amount of times. The subject and lyrics still give me goosebumps.
As I remember it anyway :) It could just be that it reminds me of family vacations to the isle of white each summer.
But I'll agree with you on Cocacobana (thought until recently I never realised that was such a violent song).
I just treated myself to 'Origin of Symmetry' from Muse and can't get 'Bliss' out of my head.

ReplyDeleteTry us. We might like it. Go on - write an entertaining post explaining baseball enthusiasm aimed at people whose only exposure to the sport is Charles M Schulz cartoons!
Do it, or I'll explain cricket to you.
You've recently been exposed to the slightly iffier side of my musical tastes, I can't therefore legitimately pass comment on those of yours of which you are ashamed.
Baseball? I have absolutely no understanding of it? Now football,Cricket or Rugby, I could bore you to tears with that, so I think the universal approach is the way forward for us
ReplyDeleteOK, girlfriend. I am going to share my current ear worm with you.
ReplyDeleteTik Tok, by Kesha...
I know...
It's been a good friendship...
But I can never lie...
I'm talking pedicure on our toes, toes
Trying on all our clothes, clothes
Hmm... maybe you should get a survey going on earworms and what percent of the general population get them vs 'we folk' hehe. I definitely vote yes... currently Brahms' Academic Festival Overture, but it could just as easily have been something by Cole Porter.
ReplyDeleteCalie: I'm ashamed to say that I love that song!
ReplyDeleteThankyou for lettimg me know what it's called - I'd never have known from the artist / title - but I know the lyrics :)

Well Leslie, Baseball has always played a big part in my life...except for the "watching it on TV" part. I started pitching at the age of 8 and didn't quit until I was 45. Of course, by then it was slow-pitch, church league softball...lol. But the intricacies are the same.
ReplyDeleteWhen you play baseball, the time flies much faster than when you watch it on TV. I guess that's why I don't keep up with the big leagues that much. Isn't baseball one of the only sports that has no time limit? There are NO ties...you play until you have a winner. Very few non-players can appreciate a 1-0 game that is decided in the 14th inning by a sacrifice fly...lol. I can...if I'm playing, but not if I have to watch TV for 5 hours to see who wins.
So there...someone that understands and likes baseball...me :)Suzi
Earworms? That's not the same as this constant white noise that is with me all the time? Seriously, I grew up listening to classical, serious music; which is my cradle of repose. I did hear the popular music of my day, I just didn't have the knack of knowing or remembering who wrote what, or who sang what. I eventually remembers 80% of lyrics, but I never really knew who preformed what. That's just me.
ReplyDeleteNow I was a pretty good baseball player in my youth; oh so many years ago. So my experience with sports is I watch college sports sometimes and mostly the playoffs.
Just haven't been interested in such things.

"I sing like a bird (a goose, btw)" made me laugh. Also, I think Copacabana is a fantastic tune to get caught in the mind.
ReplyDeleteI also have to admit I like "Seasons in the Sun".
ReplyDeleteBaseball has also been a huge part of my life since I was a kid. I had the privilege of watching the great Oakland A's teams of the 1970s. Now that I live in MO I've also become a Cardinals fan. If you ever want to chat about baseball just let me know!
