Slice of Life

Just finishing up the first work holiday I've had since New Year's. There was MLK Jr.'s birthday in January and President's Day in February, but my employer chooses not to recognize these. So, I had Memorial Day off with my family. A very hot and fine day it was.

We all spent the afternoon doing housecleaning, and the kids pitched in very well. In particular, my boy seems very intent on making the home visitor worthy. Whatever inspiration works is fine with me. I should mention that my wife hates to begin running the air conditioning as summer rolls around. She feels that it is surrendering to the elements. (Have you noticed her stubborn streak?) We hit 90 F today, which is about 34 or 35 C, I guess. Bloody hot for housework, I have to say. I told her that I thought she would relent by Wednesday afternoon. The weather is not due to break till after the weekend.

After the cleaning stopped, the missus wanted to have a meal out on the deck. She made mojitos for us, my first one. Not bad at all. Lots of good convo with the kids, and our fill of tofu hot dogs.

Mrs. Leslie also had the terrific idea to make ice cream after dinner. Rather than the conventional way, she filled gallon Ziploc bags with ice and rock salt for each of us. Then in a smaller Ziploc, we mixed sugar and half & half and vanilla (or in my kids cases, peppermint or maple). We put the sealed smaller bags into the large ones with the ice, and shook the bag for about ten minutes. It worked splendidly, and the ice cream was terrific.

We all took a half hour walk, with the dogs, after all that. And then, my wife insisted that I do aerobics with her (Yes, I mean literal aerobics: deltoids, hamstrings, etc. What did you think I meant?!)

I made a point of praising her efforts over the course of the day, and how I thought she had created some great family memories. I just don't have a brain that conjures these sort of ideas. I'll just stick to my own strengths, and feel lucky that she has a talent for planning things like this.

  1. Tofu hot dogs? That is a terrible desecration of a sacred American meal. Everyone knows that a proper hot dog is made from fat and various undefinable random meat by-products! You know, the way God intended.

Sounds like a wonderful Memorial day, Leslie. You almost make me wish I had kids myself, and I completely sympathize on the heat issue. I need to start work on my time machine so I can transport myself to October.

    Much love,

  2. I got tired just reading about your day.
I do not do well in the heat. The best I can get my wife to do is to set the AC at 80 which is fine with her but too hot for me.
We are thermostatically incompatible. I am only comfortable below 75 and she is only comfortable abot 78.

  3. Hooray for Mrs. L, making memories on Memorial Day; how appropriate!

  4. It was 107 here last Friday. Consider yourself lucky.

Personally, I'm fine with the idea of tofu hot dogs. I could give up all meat, except bacon. Gravy would be tough to let go of, though.

I notice you don't mention how bare your legs were, or the state of your hair growth. Inquiring minds want to know! ;-)

  5. Yeah, I had my mind in the gutter (aerobics).

Glad you and the family had a great time. It really make me feel good to read this.

    @Penny - lol...tofu hot dogs? Ewwww!

Oh and it's just the opposite at our house. I'm always too cold. She's always too hot.

  6. Nothing but Genuine Angus BEEF hot dogs in this house! LOL. I much prefer genuine meat to synthetic. Say's I who sips soy milk. Ugh! Tofu hot dogs, such sacrilege.

I set my air conditioning at 85F (~30C) in the summer. I'm widely tolerant of temperatures, as I keep the house at 62F in the winter. (~17C). But once outside of that range, I'll take measures. I'm also fortunate that my house is well shaded and only gets to about 80 ish during these hot days without the air conditioning (which almost never runs) and stays at least 10F warmer than the exterior even with the windows open. So my cooling bills are very modest.

Glad you had some quality time with the family. I hope this bodes well for the future.

  7. Was it stinky tofu, or just the regular kind? If you don't know what stinky tofu is (and you may not want to), watch Andrew Zimmer on the travel channel, when he visits China, or go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stinky_tofu

He eats all kinds of strange foods, but stinky tofu is one that even he has a hard time geting down.

Glad you had a good time! The ice cream idea sounds great!
